Best Hardsided Luggage

For those who are concerned about protecting their items while traveling hard sided luggage is the way to go. Back in the day, even the best hard sided luggage had some major drawbacks.

Best Hard Sided Luggage

When we first started traveling, hardshell suitcases were pretty much that annoying 50-50 split clamshell design. But nowadays companies are more innovative. The best hard sided luggage companies are taking strides with engineering.

Hard side luggage is no longer dramatically heavier, more difficult to open or less expandable than soft-side suitcases.

Nowadays, you pretty much have hard side bags that are wannabe soft side luggage! The only difference is that you get the added protecting hard shells offer.

Some of the major changes in the best hard sided luggage’s design are:

  • Expandability
  • Increased durability
  • Seamlessly integrated features
  • Exterior pockets

How Light is Lightweight?

There are a few things to think about if you want to find the best hard sided luggage for you.

Naturally, unlike their soft side friends, these cases don’t bend or compress. This fact gives you extra protection for fragile items. On the flipside, hard side cases don’t tend to offer packing wiggle room.

You should also know that hard side luggage tends to show wear and tear more than soft side cases.

For this reason, you should heavily consider each case’s warranty in your buying decision.

Without further adoo.. here are the best hard side luggage cases on the market today.

Lightweight luggage

How Light is Lightweight?

With every manufacturer pretty much so claiming that their luggage is lightweight, what does it actually mean? In our research and talking to buyers we found some luggage marked as lightweight that’s laughably heavy.

In our book luggage under 5 pounds is considered ultra lightweight luggage, from 6 to 9 pounds is lightweight. And then the 10 to 12 lb luggage is ‘ lighter than most, but not quite ‘lightweight luggage’. We come up with these numbers by looking at the average weights for different types of luggage across the board.

Our requirements for what is lightweight or ultralightweight is stricter than most standards. We’ve done this because this day the entire industry is moving toward lighter and lighter bags. We think that the old standard is outdated!

Our lightweight luggage standards

In our article, we’ve broken down the suitcases by ultra lightweight, lightweight and then lighter than your average suitcases.

As you read through the article, durability generally tends to increase with weight.

Wheeled Luggage: are spinners for you? We love them and you might too!

Wheeled Luggage: are spinners for you? We love them and you might too!

C

hoosing between different types of luggage can be challenging. Should you go for a duffle bag? Wheeled luggage? A Spinner with two or four wheels? A trunk? Soft or hard sided luggage? The questions can go on and on. Each one of us at the Urban Wayfarer, own a spinner. And me personally, I’ve traveled with spinner luggage my entire life.

Since I was little, I’ve always traveled with wheeled luggage. These bags are the easiest to travel with, especially if you are traveling abroad or with heavy items.  Wheeled luggage might not be your first choice, but, you might want to consider one.

We are firm believers that these cases are some of the best accessories on the market. Since wheeled luggage might not be top of mind, we would like to present our case for spinner luggage.

“Spinners” sounds like a fancy term, but its just a specific way to refer to 4-wheeled suitcases.

We love wheeled luggage and here’s why!

lightweight wheeled luggage makes all the difference. Like this modern light illuminating the room.

Spinner Luggage Will Save your Back

These cases allow you to keep your luggage items off of your back and carry a heavy load with ease. For those with back or rotator cuff issues look to spinners to support you. With their four rather than two wheels, spinners are the easiest to travel with.

Ease of Navigation

Porsche car interior. Wheeled luggage mades traveling easier even if it's just a road trip!

Most trips include two or more types of travel. Wheeled luggage allows you to carry, push, or wheel your items without too much effort.

In crowded streets, spinners navigate well over bumps and around people.

When you invest in a solid case, you will find that your case will stay balanced and keep you stress-free.

The higher the quality your luggage is, the easier it tends to be to navigate. High-end brands invest in engineering and wheel quality is a top priority.

If you have ever tried to manage international travel with duffle, you will know what a blessing well balanced and easy to navigate luggage is!

Having four rather than just two wheels stabilizes your suitcase by distributing weight evenly.

Convenient    Storage

Convenient storage is amajor perk of wheeled luggage

You can bring more:

Spinners allow you to carry more items, easily. Wheeled luggage means you don’t have to worry about how much you can physically carry.

Premium brands are also becoming more innovative with their luggage designs.  So now even hardside cases offer easy access to your important travel items.

Many brands like Rimowa offer hybrid luggage where hard cases include soft pockets.

Wheeled luggage also more interior organization than other types of luggage.

Hello, dividers, straps, garment bags, pockets and more!

Looks New for Longer

Wheeled luggage stays looking new for longer

Spinner luggage takes less of a beating:

By comparison with other types of carry-on and checked luggage. Spinner suitcases are some of the most durable. If you are using your wheeled luggage as a carry on you will find that you are less likely to drop and bang your case. This means your case will last longer than a duffle bag or backpack.

Also when it comes to checked luggage, TSA employees are less likely to toss wheeled bags.

Overall these features mean that your luggage will last longer than if you opted for a carry only bag.

Wheeled luggage can keep you less sweaty and looking good while traveling

The stability wheeled luggage offers lets you can stack extra items on top of your case.

Hello travel efficiency!

It goes without saying that travel can make you sticky and sweaty. With wheeled luggage you can spend less energy moving your bags. Less energy spent means less sweat stains and exhaustion!

Spinner’s four wheels means that you can buy a case you rarely have to lift.

The Downside

Okay so, we’re not blind to the drawbacks of Spinners. Our main complaint with wheeled luggage is that not all models are created equal.

Some companies skimp on luggage construction to cut costs.

All of our other gripes with wheeled luggage stem from that main issue.

woman watching the sunset

Be sure to check to buyer reviews to ensure that the luggage you are considering is accurately measured.

Typically if there is an issue with a bag’s measurement it’s because the wheels or handle isn’t included.

Also you should be aware that some brands measure their cases with volume rather than length.

We do our best to make note of size differences and let you know if we find any.

Wheeled luggage tends to cost a bit more, but its worth it! LV wallet and euros

Once you enter the 200$ range of products, you will find higher quality luggage made by brands with robust warranties.

From here once you reach higher price ranges you can find luggage that won’t just protect your items, but last you for decades and look good.

Quality wheeled luggage can be considered a business expense!

The Top Secrets to Picking the Perfect luggage for you

The Top Secrets to Picking the Perfect luggage for you

Winning luggage is the perfect luggage

A

re you happy with your luggage? Many travelers end up disappointed with their luggage. The perfect luggage seems far away, but it actually isn’t!

We want to help you avoid picking the wrong luggage! Here are the top for things you should look for to pick a suitcase that will last.

First, we recommend you figure out what type of bag you’re looking for and what style you like.
The type of bag you need, depends on where you are traveling to and how you travel.

For example, if you are going to a tropical destination you should look for something different than if you’re going to the mountains.

The Perfect

Luggage isn’t

as far away

as

you might

think!

Then consider how you plan to commute.

For example, When we travel from one form of transportation to the next, the Urban Wayfarer team aims for lightweight luggage.

While if we have to travel between two or more flight, we bring durable checked luggage. ( and pack luggage trackers!)

According to a recent survey by consumer reports after you pass these first two steps, there are 4 key things to look for to pick the perfect luggage.

By checking potential luggage for these 4 qualities, you hedge your bets against buyers regret!

The Top 4 Qualities to look for:

1. Durability

2. Navigation

3. Weight

4. Appearance

When you bought your last luggage set, did you have any of these features in mind? I know that I didn’t!

I wasn’t happy with my last luggage set, are you?

If you are, then great job, something worked out really well! But if not, or you just want to brush up on what to look for in this article we will walk you through all of they key things you should look for in your next travel bag!

Samsonite Cosmolite On Amazon
The Cosomolite Ranks very well in durability. In terms of durability the Cosmolite is the perfect luggage when tested to destruction this samsonite case ranks with 4/5 stars.

1.Durability

The perfect luggage is durable and stylish

T

The first thing you should look for to find a durable bag is its material. You want to look for bags that are puncture resistant and have reinforced corners.

With hard side luggage, you should look for a case whose material is easy to repair or won’t scratch easily. Hard side cases are prone to this type of damage.

Some warranties cover cosmetic damage, but it’s important to hedge your bets.

If cosmetic wear and tear are a big deal for you, we recommend looking for soft side luggage.

Soft side cases tend to conceal wear better than hard side cases. However, soft side bags tend to tear or stain, which is hard to fix.

Take a look at our soft side luggage materials guide here to figure out which material fits your need best.

We recommend choosing a ballistic nylon bag if you want something extra durable.

Take a look at our soft side and hardside luggage material guides to find the perfect luggage for you.

Quick tip; ultimately you want to look for a fabric or hardshell luggage material that feels substantial.

Do the Details have what it takes?

The next you want to look at to determine durability is the luggage detailing.

First, check out the zippers. YKK zippers are the standard, so you pay closer attention to how the zipper is sewn onto the bag. For the most part, zippers tend to pull either due to over packing or snagging on the extra fabric around them.

Also, you might want to take a closer look at the zipper pull tab. If the zipper tab pops up while traveling, you are in for a major headache.

For these reasons, some of the premium lines such as Rimowa use a clamp closure. Clamps’ are superior to zippers at keeping moisture out and withstanding temperature changes.

Last but not least, take a look at the handle of your suitcase. Does the handle feel comfortable and sturdy? If not you should move on.

A good handle system should take up little space inside your suitcase but very well attached. The unique handles of Briggs and Riley give you a handle that attaches from the bottom of the case while giving you a flat packing space!

Regardless of how you travel or where you are traveling to, the perfect luggage is made of durable material, solid wheels, and handle.

2.Ease of Navigation

Ease of navigation is critical to consider to find the perfect luggage

H

ow easy your bag is to transport is super important. The longer and further you travel, the more important your suitcase’s ease of navigation.

First, consider if you want 0, 2, or 4 wheels. This decision ultimately comes down to personal preference.

However, it’s good to know that frequent fliers tend to opt for four-wheeled suitcases. Four-wheeled luggage has an advantage, they offer more stability and ease of navigation.

The two common types of luggage wheels are inline and spinner wheels.

In-line wheels are just single wheels in each of the four wheel slots. In-line wheels look like in-line skate wheels and tend to be made out of rubber.

Just a word of caution:

In-line wheels can lose their shape and become unreliable and make the suitcase difficult to navigate.

When it comes to wheels, consider the type of luggage you are looking for and how much you’ll be packing. If you need to bring a lot of items 8 wheels are the way to go. Checked bags often come with double spinner sets for added stability.

Once you’ve figured out the wheel situation think about how they are attached to your luggage.

The perfect luggage has solid wheel attachments that support your bag and roll smoothly. For more details, we have a wheeled luggage guide here that can walk you through the pros and cons of wheeled luggage.

Four-Wheeled suitcases tend to be ideal for carry-ons or rolling duffles. Eight wheeled cases offer more stability and are a great choice for checked luggage.

3.Weight

The perfect luggage depends on how you plan to travel

T

he weight of your suitcase is makes a big difference.

It’s hard to say whether or not it’s a soft side or hard side luggage is truly lighter. As of late hard side cases are lighter and more durable than ever.

That said if you’re on a tight budget soft cases tend to be lighter and more durable than cheap hard cases. Though, you should be aware that there’s often a trade-off between price and durability.

Companies have to cut costs somewhere, and unfortunately engineering and material quality are some of the first things to go.

The perfect luggage for you depends on what you value in your luggage more, extra durability or lightweight.

4. Value vs. Price

Qualities of a Great brand

“Before Anything Else, Preparation is the Key to Success”

– Alexander Graham Bell

These 4 criteria will guide you through finding the right luggage brand for you.

We put the brand’s function and from at the top of this list.

This is the #1 criteria because all of the other elements are meaningless if your bag doesn’t serve your needs.

However, that is not to say that the other 3 elements can be over looked. In fact each element is important in its own right.

Most people skip researching what the best luggage is for them unless they’re traveling to a specialty destination. We get it, its just luggage, right? Wrong. Your luggage matters!

What we get is that you don’t have the time to research all of the top luggage brands and get to know them.

Let us help you out!

When it comes to research, I’m a little nutty. So the good news is that we’ve got it all of this research on the best luggage brands right here for you check out!

1. Function Trumps Form
Tumi Alpha On Amazon It’s hard to go wrong with Tumi’s excellent function and Form!
First, consider how you travel most when looking at the luggage brands. With travel bags, function should always trump form unless you only want to make a style statement! We will have more on this topic later, but for now, consider what you value the most when you travel. Are you a lightweight traveler? Rough with your luggage? A tech enthusiast?  An adventure traveler?

Up next we have the luggage warranty. A brand’s warranty can be a make or break moment when shopping.  You never know how well a bag will hold up until you test it out for yourself.  Even the best brands in the world occasionally have a defective product.

The luggage warranty is your insurance against defects and travel oopsies!

2. Mind that Warranty!
Briggs and Riley Base Line on Amazon Briggs has the excellent ” Simple as that ” Warranty
3. Material Matters
Pelican BA22 on Amazon Pelican is the gold standard for durable and well constructed luggage.

What your luggage is made out of is totally underrated! The most stylish, functional and well-insured bag can be a travel disaster. Even the best warranties cannot make up for iffy bag materials. Also what you bag is made of is important because influences how well suited it is for your adventures. You should look for suitcases made of different things depending on how you travel and to where.

Value vs. Price is the last on our list of criteria for the top luggage brands. We’ve put this last on our list because if you are only looking at this metric, you can be lead you astray.  Its hard to know the value of a product without testing the product or knowing the brand.  And then, if you look only at price, you can end up buying a disappointing bag. ( regardless of how much you spend).
4. Value vs. Price
Delsey Chatelet on Amazon Delsey luggage sits and a mid price point and offers excellent bang for your buck!
